Giesecke & Devrient launches payment sticker

Sticker for contactless payments

Giesecke & Devrient is launching the SECCOS Mobile payment sticker, which it claims is the first ‘payment sticker’ to meet the specifications of the German banking industry (view press release). The sticker, when attached to a smartphone, enables contactless payments even if the device itself is not NFC-enabled. The solution is certified for the MasterCard contactless payment method PayPass, allowing bank customers to pay bills at around 350,000 PayPass locations worldwide.

Giesecke & Devrient claims that although there are around 50 NFC-enabled smartphone models now available, the number of users is relatively low; therefore an opportunity remains for contactless payment stickers to play a role as a bridge technology on the road to m-payments. The sticker was designed especially for the German market and runs on the SECCOS Secure Chip Card Operating System, which is the German banking industry system for smartcards. Contingent on the needs of the issuing bank, the stickers can be configured as prepaid, debit, or credit cards. The first customers for the sticker are Sparda-Bank Hamburg and Donner & Reuschel.
