RNIB threatens legal action against Visa

Threatened with legal action

In July, the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) threatened legal action against Visa claiming that, under the Equality Act, the ATM machines at the Olympic and Paralympic Park should have audio assistance. RNIB withdrew the action when Visa offered to upgrade two machines temporarily which, despite this never being done, met the criteria of the Equality Act.

The RNIB worked with the London Organisation Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Logoc) for three years in the run up to the Games. Six ATM machines have Braille, tactile keypads and headphone sockets, but Visa was unable to install the software in the required timeframe.

The RNIB has reserved the right to resume legal action if there are reports from blind people struggling to operate the machines.
