Increasing number of mobile shoppers
eBay expects to handle USD10 billion in transactions on mobile devices this year, raising its estimates from USD8 billion earlier this year, as it continues its ambitions to evolve into a mobile-first business in line with changing consumer shopping habits. The company claims that its apps for smartphones and tablets have now hit 100 million downloads since launch four years ago, with a quarter of these coming in the past six months alone, suggesting that the firm’s growth on mobile is accelerating. eBay also says users have listed more than 100 million goods on the site using mobile devices, with growth fuelled by the growing penetration of smartphones and tablets in key markets such as the UK and the US, as well as a growing openness to mobile shopping among consumers.
