Hang Seng Bank to set up mobile payments service in Hong Kong

A contactless mobile payments service is to be rolled out in Hong Kong next year by Hang Seng Bank (view press release).

Working in partnership with MasterCard, PCCW mobile, Gemalto and Samsung Electronics; Hang Seng aims to allow customers to use their credit card accounts to make purchases by tapping their NFC-enabled mobile phones at payment terminals.

The platform to be used for the service will built using an open architecture with a common standard which will enable other service providers and interested parties to avail of the platform without the need to invest significant funds in building their own.

“Hang Seng is committed to investing in the latest technologies to provide customers with fast, convenient and secure access to financial services. Our mobile contactless NFC payment service will expand the range of payment channels in Hong Kong and place us among the leading cities as regards the use of advanced payment systems,” said Rose Lee, chief executive, Hang Seng Bank. “We are delighted to be partnering with PCCW mobile, MasterCard Worldwide, Gemalto and Samsung in this exciting initiative. Our collective expertise and experience will drive the successful development of an attractive new payment mode for consumers in Hong Kong.”
