Predicts record online spending
Visa Europe and retailer John Lewis predict that Monday December 3rd will be the biggest online shopping day in UK history (view press release). Visa expects British consumers to spend up to £320million on its cards alone during what has been dubbed ‘Mega Monday’.
Shoppers are anticipated to spend £222,222 per minute with 6.8million online transactions to be completed on the day using Visa debit and credit cards, a 21% increase on 2011. The busiest period of the day is predicted to be between 8.00pm and 9.00pm as consumers use their computers, mobile phones and tablets to make purchases. “Online shopping now accounts for a significant proportion of all retail spend. This reflects the confidence that shoppers feel about the security of using their Visa cards for online transactions,” said Dr Steve Perry, Visa Europe’s commercial director.
Buying & Brand Director at John Lewis, Peter Ruis is expecting the firms online shopping service to be extremely busy over the coming weeks and revealed that online sales account for around 25% of John Lewis’ trade. He said: “We are now seeing twice as many Click & Collect orders as a year ago, as customers opt for the convenience of free next day delivery to their local shop. The current online sales boost is prompted by Christmas shoppers seeking to tick off their must-have gifts on their list early.”
