Launching mobile wallet
Mobile telecommunications firm China Unicom has partnered with China Merchants Bank to launch an NFC-based mobile wallet service in Shanghai. It is available straight away to customers who have NFC enabled smartphones in Shanghai and will be rolled out nationally next year.
The new service enables subscribers to use SIM cards to link their smartphones with their accounts at China Merchants Bank. To register, customers bring their smartphones to the local China Unicom branch in order to get their devices linked to their bank accounts. Customers can then make purchases using the devices at any outlets that have the Quick Pass point of sale systems installed.
Dairy Queen, Starbucks and Watsons are among the merchants participating in the mobile wallet programme so far.
