Barclays opens up cheque imaging software to Android users

Over 500,000 Android users will be able to digitally cash cheques through Barclays imaging application, with the service also being made available to iPad customers.

Up until now Barclays customers have only been able to use the software on their iPhones, depositing £750,000 in the past 12 months. Customers can deposit a maximum of £500 using the payment tool.

Barclays are the not the only bank that have been delving into the world of cheque imaging software. In June Payment Eye reported that Lloyds bank intends to accept cheques via its smartphone app, as its launches a pilot scheme for the technology, using 1700 of its staff to test the service.

‘‘Our customers have welcomed this convenient new way of depositing one of the oldest forms of payment, which is why extending to android phones is an important step forward in giving all customers the ability to pay in cheques using their mobile devices,’’ stated Ashok Vaswani, Barclays Personal and Corporate Banking chief executive
