21 Inc launches new Bitcoin computer

The venture-backed company is accepting pre-orders for its 21 Bitcoin Computer, which will allow users to instantly mine Bitcoin and even set-up their own iTunes-style goods stores.


Pocket-sized Bitcoin

The company has priced the computer at $399.99 and for that they will receive a pocket-sized device that will contain a custom mining chip, a Linux-based OS and a large datacentre backend.

“With this pocket-sized device, if you are an entrepreneur or developer, you can now instantly buy or sell digital goods and services at the command line using Bitcoin,” said CEO Balaji Srinivasan.


Passive income

Srinivasan went on to say how he the computer could become a source of “passive income” through sales of Bitcoin-payable goods and services.

The computer will allow users to instantly mine Bitcoin from the command line, sell API calls for Bitcoin, like English-to-Chinese translation or file conversion, set up your own personal iTunes-like digital goods store, reward peers for posting your links on social media, make any IoT hardware Bitcoin-rentable, from smart locks to 3D printers.

It will include a WiFi adapter, RPi 2, power supply, USB-to-laptop cable, and 128GB SD card.


‘Bitcoin next fundamental system resource’

The CEO said he wants to use “the success of the 21 Bitcoin Computer to help make Bitcoin the next fundamental system resource, available by default on every new computer.”
