BNP Paribas trials OT’s dynamic cryptogram card

It’s funny that in this day and age, with tokenisation, mobile payments and biometrics, the good old payment card is still going strong. What’s even more funny is that, unlike tokenisation in Apple, Samsung and Android Pay – the numbers on the card don’t change. Until now.

Earlier in the year, Oberthur Technologies (OT) revealed plans to trial its Motion Code payment card: a card that replaces the three digit CVC code on the back of the card with a small screen. This screen will display a new code that changes automatically every few hours. The batter powering the screen is supposed to last for three years. The cards will be rolled out in France by the end of the year.

In the meantime, BNP Paribas is running a trial with 1,000 French people. Despite all the innovations in payment security, fraud always manages to keep up and even get ahead. According to figures from UK’s Financial Fraud Action, credit card fraud in the UK added up to £755m in 2015.

“More than 90% of online transactions in France are made using payment cards. The dynamic security code will improve the security of purchases made online and is compatible with all e-commerce websites. We are glad to have supported BNP Paribas and OT in this innovative move,” said Gilbert Arira, Groupement CB CEO.
